Running Start
Running Start allows eligible 11th and 12th grade students to enroll in college level (100 or higher) courses in a 2-year college or technical college.
Both the high school and the college are involved in the decision to determine whether a student may enroll in Running Start. The high school determines that the student is eligible to be in 11th or 12th grade, and that the college courses selected by the student qualify for high school credit. The college determines whether the student qualifies for admission. The student may be required to take a placement test administered by the college.
Have the personal traits of a dedicated student, including maturity, independence, organization, self-motivation, self-advocacy
Have their own transportation or access to Metro
Have time for homework. College homework may require 1-2 hours of work outside of class per every 1 hour spent in class
Have consistent attendance – you should be prepared to attend college classes EVERY DAY! The credit you earn from a 5-credit college class is what you would earn over the course of a whole school year in a high school class, so missing ONE day of college classes can be like missing a week or more of a high school class!
Your school counselor will discuss these expectations with you and your family during your enrollment meeting:
1. When a student enrolls in Running Start they will be treated as a college student. Parents may not be able to access grades, attendance and instructor information. Students are responsible for their own transportation.
2. Grades earned through Running Start will be used in computing a student’s high school GPA. Grades issued through a community college cannot be changed or altered by the high school.
3. Students must set up an appointment with their high school counselor to fill out registration paperwork (EVF) for each quarter.
4. Students must communicate any change in Running Start courses to their counselor. Dropping or failing a class may negatively impact graduation eligibility and sports participation.
5. Grades earned through Running Start begin a student’s transcript and college grade point average. This GPA will follow them throughout their college career.
6. Transferability of Credits: Washington State four-year institutions recognize community/technical college credits. Some in-state private colleges and out-of-state universities do not recognize college credit taken during high school. All Running Start students are advised to check with the four year college they plan to attend to be sure their credits will be accepted.
7. Families are responsible for paying for student fees and books. They are also responsible for paying for courses under the 100 level and for any courses above the FTE allowed on the Enrollment Verification Form (EVF). A student may qualify for fee assistance if they qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch.
8. It is the student’s responsibility to seek information about changes in daily bell schedule, extracurricular and social events at Highline. Please check the Highline High School website once a week.
9. It is the student’s responsibility to remain in frequent contact with their high school counselor regarding their High School and Beyond Plan, State Testing and other graduation requirements.
10. Students hoping to earn an AA degree through Running Start must work with their college advisor to create a two-year course plan.
