6 HHS Students Meet VP Kamala Harris

One of Highline Public School’s electric school buses starred as backdrop to remarks by the vice president of the United States at Lumen Field on Wednesday morning. Vice President Kamala Harris announced $1 billion this year for the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean School Bus Program, which is part of a bipartisan infrastructure law passed last year. The funds will help districts replace older buses with electric and cleaner-running models.

Behind the Scenes

Six Highline High School seniors from the HHS Environmental Club and Superintendent Ivan Duran rode one of our electric buses in the motorcade and had a chance to meet Vice President Harris in person just before the event.

Prior to the announcement by Vice President Harris, remarks were shared by Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Washington Governor Jay Inslee, U.S. Senator Patty Murray, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Director Michael Regan. When the event concluded, before boarding the bus to return, the HHS students enlisted Dr. Duran's help to meet Governor Jay Inslee, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, and nab interviews with a Kids Scoop reporter and Q13 News.

You Have an Email from the White House...

The six seniors received official email invitations from the White House. Included with current club members was former club president and current UW student Nha Khuc ‘21, who helped lead the charge resulting in the installation of solar panels on the new school this year.

Interviews & Selfies with the VP

Listen to the FOX 13 interview with HHS alum Nha Khuc and Dr. Duran, in which HHS students also show their selfies with the vice president to the news camera. An official photograph was taken by the vice president's photographer. The students did not know they would get the chance to talk to the VP and see her briefly at the Fairmount Hotel, then walk out with her and a handful of younger children and a few families to continue their bus ride to Lumen Field. She greeted them personally outside just before they got on the bus again. And, let them take selfies with her.

Student Reflections

Afterward, current club President Jordan Powers described the unusual day.

“What I liked best about the event was that it was an environment of citizens who had hope for not only their own future but future generations. I felt extremely inspired, especially as the president of the Environmental Club, about how important it is to strive for change and move forward as a society.”

“The opportunity was extraordinary,” Powers said.  “I am extremely grateful to have experienced the summit and to have met Kamala Harris. “I feel like it sets a tone for leaders that what you do matters.”

Highline's 3+ Electric Buses

An early adopter, Highline Public Schools already received three school buses and charging stations this year through a state Department of Ecology grant program, is anticipating three more, and continues to submit additional applications for funding more clean buses to add to the fleet.

More information about Highline's electric buses is available in our August 19, 2022 news post about the ribbon cutting for our first three electric buses.
